Bio and Chemical Engineering at TU Dortmund University

The Faculty of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering has existed at TU Dortmund University for over 50 years and is one of the largest and most successful in Germany in the field of process engineering. It comprises 15 chairs and working groups on the various research areas. As of January 2023, the faculty has twelve male and two female professors. The faculty is committed to the development and improvement of safe, resource- and environmentally compatible processes and products for the chemical and biotechnological industries. This guiding principle is reflected not only in research, but also in teaching.

The faculty has an Instagram - account bci.tudortmund, a Facebook page at bci.tudortmund and a YouTube channel Fakultät BCI TU Dortmund. Here you can find our faculty brochure.

In a uniquely close interlocking of natural sciences and engineering, researchers at the faculty produce excellent research results in numerous, also international, projects and cooperations. The faculty maintains close cooperation with local non-university research institutions such as the Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences ISAS e.V., the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology and other institutions in the Dortmund Technology Park.

Students are offered Bachelor's and Master's degrees in bioengineering and Bachelor's and Master's degrees in chemical engineering as well as an English-language Master's degree in chemical engineering, "Process System Engineering".

Building on basic courses in natural sciences and engineering for a secure and broad basic knowledge, there are extensive opportunities for specialisation in many disciplines, such as technical chemistry, biotechnology, modelling, process design and optimisation.

The quality of the research-oriented teaching is ensured with highly qualified staff and with excellently equipped experimental and demonstration facilities, which at the same time guarantee the connection to practice.

In the period September 1975 to March 2021, 1068 women and men completed their doctorates at the faculty.

Please check "Doctorates an der BCI" for more information.

In the period from December 1975 to March 2021, 39 women and men completed their habilitation at the faculty; over 45% of our habilitation students have been appointed as professors at universities.
