Teaching Award 2025 for student commitment
The award was presented on December 16, 2025 as part of TU Dortmund University's annual academic celebration. With their extraordinary commitment, the two students have made a lasting contribution to improving teaching in the Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering degree programs.
The starting point for their commitment was the course Higher Mathematics III, a central basic subject that poses a particular challenge for many students. Based on their work as tutors and direct feedback from the exercise groups, they developed supplementary learning opportunities that specifically support students in understanding complex content.
The centerpiece is a self-learning platform they designed on Moodle, which combines flexible and individual learning paths, compact summaries, practical examples, explanatory videos and interactive tests. In addition, they initiated a voluntary preliminary course for Advanced Mathematics III, in which content from previous mathematics courses is refreshed to make it easier to start the semester.
With these digital and presence-oriented offerings, Kjell Machalowsky and Tarje Mohrdieck have provided valuable impetus for a learning-promoting, motivating and sustainable teaching design at TU Dortmund University - a commitment that has now been recognized with the Teaching Award 2025.
