Internship abroad for BCI students

The places available abroad each year are very limited. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places, a selection will be made, essentially on the basis of subject-specific qualifications, examinations already taken and certificates of achievement (grades, credit points, number of semesters) and other suitability (e.g. participation in BCI department committees, university and non-university commitments). If equivalence is determined according to the above criteria, the applicants will be drawn by lot.

If a placement leads to concrete success or is classified as promising by the Dean's Office of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering (phase 2), the student undertakes not to enter into any other commitments during the planned period of stay without prior consultation (e.g. completion of internships elsewhere).

The student undertakes to prepare a written report on his/her experience after the internship and to make it available to the management of the Dean's Office.

Addition for Japan interns:

Experience has shown that industrial internships in Japan are quite demanding in terms of academic standards.

It is therefore recommended that you only plan such an internship from the 5th semester onwards.

The internship in Japan usually takes place from mid-October to mid-December. Dates other than this are not possible

Applicants must be enrolled students of biological and chemical engineering at TU Dortmund University, be willing to provide social support for foreign exchange students in our department and have a good command of English or, for France, a good command of French.

Applications for an internship abroad must be submitted in writing by December 31 for a stay abroad planned for the following year (phase 1). Pre-selection of applicants is expected by mid-February. Applications received after December 31 may be considered if places are still available.

  • Cover letter in German (a - f) and English (a - d) to the management of the Dean's Office with a request for mediation.
    • It should contain the following information:
    • a) Reasons for the desired stay abroad,
    • b) If applicable, special specialist knowledge and preferred fields of work (also naming fields of work that are not to be considered under any circumstances),
    • c) Periods for the intended stay (duration not less than 2 and more than 6 months) and a statement as to whether it is possible to deviate from this,
    • d) Address and telephone number at the university in Dortmund, if possible also parents' address, e-mail address,
    • e) if applicable, chair/working group and name of the supervisor with whom the student is or was a student assistant,
    • f) Information that could be helpful for the application (e.g. knowledge of the national language, participation in the student council, support of foreign students, social commitment, etc.).
  • Two photographs;
  • Curriculum vitae in tabular form (in German and English or French);
  • Copies of Abitur certificate, Bachelor's certificate if applicable, other relevant certificates (all in duplicate);
  • Current transcript of records, possibly supplemented by other examinations or academic achievements that have been taken but not yet recorded (including grades and credit points) (all in duplicate)
  • Current semester certificate

The costs of the stay are usually subsidized by scholarships or company payments, and in some cases covered in full.

For a stay outside Europe, you can apply for a travel grant via the International Office, e.g. PROMOS scholarship. The application should be submitted as early as possible, as funds are very limited.

Freemover

As a freemover, you have the opportunity to plan your academic journey independently and visit a company of your choice.

The following are particularly promising

  • German companies that have parent or subsidiary companies abroad;
  • a direct application to foreign companies;
  • via free offers from IAESTE or application to IAESTE (contact the International Office of TU Dortmund University;
  • via contacts of university lecturers in the BCI department to foreign institutes and industrial companies

Further opportunities arise through programs of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), through IAESTE or through scholarships from the BCI department to promote exchange.

The International Office can also arrange suitable industrial placements. A lot of information and good support is also available from the European Students Network.

  • that if you have been selected by TU Dortmund University for ERASMUS+ funding within your final year of study and complete the internship abroad within one year of completing the relevant study phase, you can also receive funding?
  • that you can have an internship credited within the framework of the internship guidelines of the Department of Mechanical Engineering?
